Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis) meaning “Red Bush” grows naturally and is harvested in South Africa’s fynbos biome, mostly restricted to a small area of Africa known as the Cederberg.

The bushy plant is harvested by hand and bruised or cut to encourage oxidation. Oxidation allows the rich red colour and flavours to develop. Both the stems and the leaves are used to make rooibos herbal tea. Rooibos is known for its health-promoting properties due to high levels of natural antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents and zero levels of caffeine.

As a fynbos species, it forms part of the natural vegetation of the cape floral kingdom, the smallest and richest of the world’s floral kingdoms, and the only one that is confined to a single country.

The Rooibos plant is a shrub-like bush with green needle-like leaves and can grow up to a height of 2m. Yellow flowers appear in spring, and the final fruit is a small pod with one or two hard seeds.
